Defining SPACE, bigger is not always better

Small SpacesHave you ever thought really hard about how to maximize your space and use it to the best of it’s advantage? I find that in my profession sometimes the most joy I get is solving these types of puzzles. I feel rewarded when I find just the right purpose for the smallest of spaces. We are all multi-taskers who live busy lives and sometimes our lives can be very much reflective of how we live in our homes. It is very important to find form and function in all that we do. I have a rule about this though -if you don’t look at it, sit on it, or use it at least monthly, you probably don’t need it.

In our own way we are all “hoarders” to some degree – we keep things, whether it be artwork we drew when we were five or a ticket stub from a concert we attended; perhaps we couldn’t part with those text books that cost an arm and a leg in college. I think that there is a place for everything, quality over quantity in each category.

If we can simplify our lives by removing material possessions, I bet we could all find a deeper meaning to happiness. I recommend picking up this book at your local library by Sarah Susanka, “The Not So Big House”.

The Not So Big HouseThis was one of the most inspirational books that I have ever read. It looks past the idea of the McMansion lifestyle and defines meaning in what fulfills our bodies and minds as it relates to SPACE. I challenge all of you to think about what you really NEED. It can be lovely and well thought out in plan. It can be the most beautiful color, the greatest fabric, the BEST design you could have ever imagined and it may fit tucked away behind a 6’ft wall and bring meaning and happiness to your life.
