This week’s final featured DesignSherpa “What Inspires You?” contest entry comes from James Nordlie of Archiventure Group PC Architects.

I am inspired by the endless design possibilities provided by new destinations, cultures, histories, materials, colors, tastes, smells, sounds and diverse ways of life and ritual originating in the continent of India. It is here that I am currently designing.

The subtle layers and endless vistas of this image I have on my wall remind me of the timeless journey without worrying about the intended destination.

We’re a little over a quarter of the way through featuring our top 100 DesignSherpa “What Inspires You?” contest entries. We’ve got plenty of design inspiration coming your way soon, so stay tuned!

Today’s entry comes from Bonnie Pickartz of Goshen Timber Frames.

The road less traveled should lead to your front door.

For centuries it took decades to build a home that was built to last.

A hundred years ago, we decided to build better, cheaper, faster. Homes went up, often boxes with no spirit, no efficiencies except cost. They were built to come down or be renovated in 30 years.

Today homes are going to the landfill. More sustainable homes, homes that sit lightly on the land, are shaking the norms of design and construction.

I’m inspired by sustainable homes and a future that honors our past, present, and future.

Today’s featured top 100 DesignSherpa “What Inspires You?” contest entry comes from Jocelyn Yazzie.

She writes…

I was in school and a professor asked us to do a paper on what inspires me to be a designer and when I first laid my eyes on the Guggenheim Museum, I thought how truly amazing it was. I had never seen anything like it before and I felt very humbled by design and architecture. I could not believe that some person had the creative mind to actually have the museum come to life and there were no limitations. I believe myself there are no limitations in design whether it be buildings, furniture or open space. This museum is truly an art of beauty. It makes me believe that as a Designer, anything is possible. It is very powerful, the mind of a Designer and to be able to make a design a reality. Best of all, what we create is enjoyed and admired by people. When I feel like I run out of ideas or am limited in my thinking, I look to this creation for my inspiration. I feel rejuvenated and grateful all over again. Because someone did this, I can also grow as a Designer. This is why I love design, there are no limits.

She writes…

PARIS! Soul lights up! Ideas fire! Imagination soars, right up the middle, to the top of the Eiffel Tower! From middle America. Me, 4th generation Kansan. Born an artist. Born to design. Eternal child’s wonder. Embracing each day with a bird’s eye view of the Universe. Strong. Steel. Annealed. Delicate. Complicated. Fancy. Sophisticated. Excitement. Discovery. Raw. Refined. Each new day, to dress up, to embellish, to invent, to pretty up,, to solve problems, to inspire and nurture others. Each day, to savor each delicious drop. As I would a French pressed coffee.

Today starts another week of featured entries from the DesignSherpa “What Inspires You?” contest, which will send one lucky winner to Paris with $10,000. Today’s entry is from Kasey Buick.

She writes…

I am inspired by simplicity… the thought of calm in the middle of my day…the small pop of yellow in the sea of tranquility…a hint of a breeze coming thru the windows on a summer day.
Tea parties with my children……a bit of the unexpected in a day of total chaos. This image represents to me what my life is ..on a completely non normal…wishful thinking….Paris dreaming…lemon bar eating….tea drinking day.

As a child I dreamed of being a fashion designer, but then I tried sewing some clothes. That was the end of that dream. But it wasn’t the end of my love of color, textiles, design, high fashion and storytelling. I find this image inspiring because it combines many different genres and yet is timeless. I am inspired by the combination of worn vintage treasures with fresh faced new ones, one of a kind elements hobb-nobbing with everyday pieces, the elegant and the tattered, the masculine and the feminine all wound together and the story they are all telling together.

Here’s the latest featured entry from the DesignSherpa “What Inspires You?” contest. We’re unveiling the top 100 entries that have made it onto round two. Stay tuned for more to come!

Today’s entry comes from Kelly Williams.

This pair of 1950 Regency Wing Chairs with Cabriole legs inspires me. Nothing sets the tone for a well-designed room like a pair of quality chairs. These are a model of classic sophistication. The curvilinear lines of femininity, perceived in the bone structure, are lovely to behold. Upholstered in a Charcoal and off-white Sunbrella fabric, these chairs are not only comfortable but boast the added bonus of also being low-maintenance. The combination makes a strong study in contrast that is bold without being overwhelming. The pair exhibits clean feminine lines without being overly done. They personify STYLE, GRACE and SUBSTANCE.

Today’s featured “What Inspires You?” top 100 contest entry comes from Kenneth Kimberling of Kimberling Interiors.

Ken writes…

Tabula Rasa
A blank slate fills me with revolutionary ideas ranging from colors to textiles to textures to temperature. The possibilities are endless. Shall I wrap this space with warm Maze or cold Ice, hot Flame or cool Spruce? Do I dress it in cotton or drape it with wool, kiss it with silk or luxurious charmeuse? Should I anchor with granite, burl wood, or steel? With a blank slate, my pulse quickens as I consider Contemporary, Country French, Neo-Classic, Mediterranean Seaside, and Asian Zen possibilities. A colorless, lifeless, lonely empty space inspires me to dream. Dreams come true.

She writes…

This photo of my home office door inspires me because of the infinite possibilities that await me on the other side. I treasure my beloved vintage door as it has its vast history with its chipped paint and bronze handle. Yet, every time I touch that handle to enter, new creations are about to become someone’s future beloved treasure. Inspiration is conceived not through ideas, but through dreams. It is dreams that inspire the ideas which in turn become action. This side of the door the dream awaits. As I open and enter, inspiration is born.

What inspires Warren Harrell of Gallery 212?

We’re beginning another week of DesignSherpa “What Inspires You?” contest entry highlights. Today’s entry comes from Warren Harrell of Gallery 212.

Here’s Warren’s entry:

The inspiration that guides my passion for great design comes when I see a structure that was so inspired that it just morphs into the natural terrain and environment. It looks like it belongs there and the design is so contemporary and yet timeless as it flows into the untouched landscape of the surroundings.
The passion that excites and inspires also drives my brain to fervor to create that environmental balance between the natural and the man made. Seek the limitless answers that nature provides and to take them and apply them with inspiration and passion to the built environment.
